Cava

Mata I Coloma

Pere Mata produced his first vintage of cava in 2000.  Having worked as a consultant for other cava producers, he was confident on going out on his own and from the beginning he was clear in his goal:  to make top quality cavas in the model of the grower Champagne producers.  Mata works exclusively with the traditional Penedés grape varieties of Xarello, Macabeu, Parellada and Garnacha from three-plus hectares of vines in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia which are all organically certified.  He makes a dizzying number of cuvées within three styles using a number of different grape blends:  young wines, reserve wines, and some with barrel ageing.  All the wines are aged a minimum of 24 months and some cuvées even longer.  What they all do have in common is zero dosage.  He produces about 8,000 bottles of the numbered cupada series which are released yearly and stand for his non-vintage production.

Priorat

Close Figueras

Grapevines, almonds, olives and figs are nearly all that thrive on the poor, schistous soils of Priorat.  All had been planted here since Roman times and prospered under the care of the Carthusian monks throughout the middle-ages.  Phylloxera and war decimated the vineyards of Priorat and relatively few vines remained by the 1970’s.  But in the 1980’s a small group of hard-working, serious winemakers recognized the potential of its ancient grenache and carignan vines and began to revitalize the wine region.  As an importer, Christopher Cannan was an early adapter of the new generation of Priorat wines and was among the first to bring the wines to the U.S.   Then, a few years later, with the purchase of some abandoned vines near Gratallops, he also became a winegrower in Proiorat.  He and his wife called the property Clos Figueras for the magnificent, ancient fig trees on the property.  Even the first vintages of the wine put it company of the great wines of Catalonia.
